Should I get dental implants abroad?

We understand the temptation of looking at dental clinics in other countries, as the low prices initially appear to be extremely attractive. However, there are many risks that come with receiving dental work abroad that make the reduced prices seem not so great.

Oftentimes, the price that is advertised to you will be drastically changed once you’re sat in the dentist’s chair. Many clinics have a tendency to be misleading with their prices, so you should check to make sure the price they’re offering includes every part of the dental implant procedure – not just the crown and implant themselves. You’ll also need to think about the costs for any x-rays or scans you’ll have, the anaesthetic needed for the procedure, aftercare advice and perhaps post-surgical medication. These should all be included in the quote given to at your consultation but are often overlooked.

Going abroad for dental work also means you’ll need to factor in the extra time and costs for travelling to and from the destination, as well as accommodation for at least a few days after you’ve received your dental implant treatment. Quite often, these additional costs for flights and hotels etc. will bump up of your final cost, meaning that the savings you may make from the actual treatment have disappeared.

You’ll also need to keep in mind the level of communication that you are able to have with your dentist. Think about the potential language barriers that may be present and whether you feel comfortable enough to receive complex dental treatment in a country where you aren’t fully confident with the fluidity of communication. Right through from your consultation to the aftercare process, you should be able to speak with your dentist and feel comfortable that all your questions have been answered to the highest degree of clarity.

Although dental implant surgery is considered to be a safe procedure, there are some potential problems that can occur, regardless of where you have the treatment done. The main issue here with having your dental implants done abroad is that if any of these problems do occur, you may have a difficult time getting them fixed. You’d have to make sure the dentist who performs your treatment is also willing to address any issues, as when you return to the UK, there is a slim chance that a dentist will treat you.

This is because when you elect to have your dental work done abroad, you are accepting all the risks that go with doing so, and many UK dentists do not want to have their reputation marked by associating themselves with issues created by other dentists that could have been avoided. In the UK, all dentists must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and are strictly monitored to ensure hygiene levels and quality of care are always adhered to. The same is not true for other countries, who have their own regulations and may not have the same high standards as those in the UK.

Before deciding to get your dental implants done abroad, you should get at least one quote from a dentist within the UK to gauge what the full costs will actually be. You can then compare these with the total costs that will need to be taken into consideration for your trip abroad and the potential added risks. Only then can you make an informed decision as to where you get your dental implants done.

I had my consultation with Dr Buddha. He was by far the most professional compared to the other clinics I went to for consultations this week. His colleague Lisa was very friendly and helpful.
