What Exactly Is Orthodontic?

Orthodontic treatment (usually with braces) is most often used to improve the appearance and alignment of crooked, protruding or crowded teeth, and to correct problems with the bite of the teeth.

The benefits of orthodontics can include:

  • Correction of dental crowding and straightening of your teeth
  • Correction of your bite so the front and back teeth meet evenly
  • Reducing the chance of damage to prominent teeth
  • Improving your appearance, including your smile

Many people have crowded or crooked teeth, or their teeth don't meet correctly when they bite. These problems can mean the teeth are more likely to become damaged or put a strain on jaw muscles.

Orthodontic FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics

  • We deal with this question a lot in respect to treatment provided by other providers. We offer second opinions and also we accept transfer cases, indeed other dentists refer cases they cannot finish to us.
  • Our practitioners have completed thousands of orthodontic cases, no just a few cases each year. They also supervise other dentists wishing to learn orthodontics. They have a rich experience with numerous systems like Damon, Fastbraces, Incognito-lingual braces, Invisalign, ClearCorrect, Six Month Smiles, traditional braces.
  • They also have carried out complex cases like impacted canines, surgical cases, multiple missing teeth cases. This allows us to offer comprehensive tailored treatments based on our patients needs and budgets.
  • Most importantly it gives the patient confidence that if issues arise during treatment the practitioners are able to deal with them.
  • Most of our patients are surprised that we are generally cheaper than their own dentist for braces, invisible braces, Invisalign etc..
  • We are often staggered by the prices patients are quoted by their own dentists for generally very simple brace treatments like orthodontic relapse.
  • Most of our treatments are for adult braces.
  • 90% of our practice is orthodontic treatment only and as a result we have an economy of scale.
  • Hence our price match guarantee.
  • If you provide a genuine written quotation from another practice we will endeavour to match or beat the quotation.
  • Recently many companies now offer dentists orthodontic laboratory services. Companies like Invisalign offer clear aligners to move teeth. Six Month Smiles offer individualised patient packs of brackets and archwires. These companies offer dentists training in their systems that range from between half a day to six days. The tuition offers little in treatment planning or orthodontic theory. Most of the courses offer no live training with actual patients.
  • The companies have realised there is a significant trust created between the dentist who has carried out a restoration (filling) with little or no pain and the patient. Many of the dentists have carried out only a few brace cases.
  • The costs of these treatment are generally more than we charge for complete orthodontic treatments.
  • We offer hygiene treatments during your brace journey and unlike your own dentist we can dismantle the brace at each hygiene visit to ensure a thorough cleaning.
  • ALWAYS remember to brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day.
  • Make sure to use toothpaste that contains fluoride, and ask your orthodontist or family dentist if you need a fluoride rinse. This will help prevent cavities!
  • If you take out your retainer to eat, make sure you brush your teeth, floss, and remember to keep it safe in its container so that it does not get lost or broken.
  • Keep your retainer clean, too, by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by your orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.
  • During your treatment, try to avoid foods with a lot of sugar, which increases the amount of bacteria that grows in your mouth, causing more plaque and possibly cavities.
  • Avoid sticky and chewy foods (caramel, chewing gum, gummy bears), hard foods (hard candy, nuts, ice cubes), or any foods that could possibly get stuck in your braces (corn on the cob, soft bagels, ribs, taffy, etc.).
  • Be sure to schedule your routine checkups with your family dentist. It is recommended that you continue to visit the dentist every six months.
  • The amount of time spent in braces will vary depending on the individual patient, because every smile responds differently to treatment. Treatment times can take anywhere between six and 30 months, but most standard treatments take about 22 months.
  • Most fixed brace systems irrespective of bracket design or material will achieve levelling and alignment of the teeth within the first six months, this forms the basis of the rapid orthodontic systems.
  • Detailing of the teeth and the idealisation of the occlusion (the bite) generally takes longer. Generally patients are not aware of the occlusion (bite), are not interested in this aspect of treatment or if they are they are some are advised that this aspect will make their treatment very expensive. In reality we provide full courses of treatment for less than many other providers charge for Invisalign, Six Month Smiles of Fastbraces.
  • Six Month Smiles is a registered trademark, it implies a treatment time of 6 months but does not guarantee this.
  • Compromises in treatment, limitations of treatment and alternative treatments must be discussed during the consultation and consenting process. If a practitioner is trained only on one or two of the fast alignment systems can they fully explain the treatment plan, its limitations and alternatives?
